Like many other connected devices, XR is a part of a growing constellation of the Internet of Things (IoT).
As with other connected devices strong cybersecurity measures are crucial. No doubt the qualities of XR (immersive and realistic interaction) raise additional concerns about the manifestation of cyber incidents. While the protocols for mitigating cybersecurity breaches are similar to other IOT technologies, XR presents some unique challenges.
Identity and access management pose important challenges. This is especially the case where information used for access control, such as biometric data, is also used to realistically depict an individual within the XR environment. The appropriation of one’s avatar is another example that raises concerns. Multifactor authentication in XR can be used as a preventative mechanism, and XR companies are actively developing approaches and guidelines that both safeguard cybersecurity as well as privacy.
