The comic book-style infographic explains how the technology would work for the average user.
Washington, D.C. — On Tuesday, September 13th, the XR Association (XRA) – the leading XR trade association – released, “Into the Digital World: XRA’s Guide to Immersive Technology”, an infographic that illustrates everyday use cases for virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) technology.
Intended as a primer for general audiences with limited background knowledge in XR, “Into the Digital World” follows a day in the life of Kayla, a medical student, who uses a VR headset to participate in virtual boxing, and later AR for navigational purposes, and MR to practice complex medical procedures in class. Through a series of vignettes, Kayla uses XR technology to enhance everything from a stop at the bakery to her online shopping experience. The visualizations provide one of the industry’s first guides to emerging technologies and the functions of XR technology.
“In order for us to ensure a long-term positive experience for everyone, we have to take the time to explore and explain this new technology,” said Elizabeth Hyman, CEO of the XR Association. “We noticed a primer, which breaks down the functions of this technology, did not exist. ‘Into the Digital World’ provides a digestible explanation through tangible use cases for how XR technology will be put into practice today and in the coming years.”
“Into the Digital World: XRA’s Guide to Immersive Technology” is released a day before XRA and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation (ITIF) host their second annual AR/VR Policy Conference on September 14. Attendees will receive a copy of the guide in-person.
“As the leading voice of the XR industry, we’ve been part of many discussions around implementing XR technology across sectors and demystifying how it functions and is used,” said Joan O’Hara, Senior Vice President of Public Policy at the XR Association. “This document works to explain XR, and provides an outline for policy makers and the general public on immersive technology’s role in everyday life.”
