Washington, D.C. – Today, the XR Association (XRA), the trade association representing the growing ecosystem of companies powering virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (XR), released the revised edition of Chapter 1 of its Developers Guide, Fundamental Design Principles for Immersive Experiences. This updated guide reflects the evolution of XR technologies over the past five years and provides developers with expanded insights for creating impactful immersive experiences.
First published in 2018, Chapter 1 served as a foundational resource for XR developers. Over the past five years, the XR industry has evolved significantly, with technologies like headset-based augmented reality and mixed reality becoming more common. The revised guide includes updates on these technologies, general edits, and tweaks to reflect the latest developer tools.
“As the XR industry matures, it’s important that we update resources to reflect current tools and practices,” said Elizabeth Hyman, CEO of the XR Association. “This chapter remains a key resource for developers creating immersive experiences.”
The review committee found most of the original guidance still relevant but expanded it to address changes in the XR ecosystem. New sections focus on development for mixed reality and augmented reality, ensuring the guide aligns with modern industry practices.
“This revised guide reflects the collaborative spirit of the XR industry,” said Stephanie Montgomery, Vice President of Research and Development at XRA. “By bringing together insights from across our member companies and the broader XR community, we’ve created a resource that empowers developers to meet the demands of this dynamic field.”
The updated Chapter 1 aligns with XRA’s mission of fostering the responsible development of XR technology. As XR continues to reshape how we work, learn, and connect, foundational design principles remain critical to creating experiences that are safe, accessible, and impactful.
