Washington, D.C. – On Wednesday, August 7, Elizabeth Hyman, CEO of the XR Association, participated in the SOUPS 2024 Virtual Workshop on Usable Cybersecurity and Privacy for Immersive Technologies hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. Moderated by Dylan Gilbert, Privacy Policy Advisor at NIST’s Privacy Engineering Program, Hyman was joined by Christopher Lafayette, Emergent Technologist at GatherVerse, and Jameson Spivack, Senior Policy Analyst for Immersive Technologies at the Future of Privacy Forum. Panelists delved into current and potential future considerations for usable privacy and security related to immersive technologies.
Hyman drew from privacy recommendations outlined in the Charting the Future of Immersive Technology: Transforming Work, Education, Health, and Entertainment white paper, emphasizing the importance of establishing clear and adaptable guidelines for privacy that can evolve alongside rapid technological advancements. She highlighted the need for collaboration between industry leaders, policymakers, and technologists to create a framework that ensures user trust and safety in immersive environments. The discussion also touched on the challenges of balancing innovation with privacy concerns, particularly with the rise of artificial intelligence, as well as the role of public awareness and education in fostering a secure digital future.
