In 2025, the XR Association (XRA) reinforced its leadership as a trusted voice for the immersive technology industry in the U.S. policy landscape, submitting substantive comments in response to three high-profile federal Requests for Information (RFIs). Together, these efforts reflect XRA’s broad engagement across research priorities, workforce development, industrial innovation, and privacy frameworks.
In April, XRA submitted comments to the House Committee on Energy and Commerce’s Privacy Task Force in response to its RFI on a national privacy and security framework. XRA urged policymakers to adopt a flexible, innovation-friendly approach that allows immersive technologies to thrive while maintaining strong consumer protections. The association highlighted that XR systems can collect spatial, voice, and biometric data, and therefore any privacy framework should account for the unique characteristics of immersive experiences.
In July, XRA filed comments with the National Science Foundation’s Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships (TIP), urging the agency to retain and elevate “immersive technology” as a distinct priority area. XRA’s response emphasized that XR, spatial computing, and digital twins are key enablers of translation, workforce upskilling, industrial competitiveness, and national security.
Most recently, XRA submitted comments to the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) and the National Science and Technology Council in response to their RFI on the upcoming National Strategic Plan for Advanced Manufacturing. XRA’s submission underscored the integral role of immersive technologies in strengthening America’s manufacturing ecosystem, from accelerating design and prototyping through digital twins to upskilling workers and enhancing factory safety and efficiency.
Collectively, these submissions demonstrate XRA’s ongoing commitment to ensuring that immersive technologies are recognized as a cross-cutting capability driving innovation, productivity, and global competitiveness across sectors.
