XRA DISCUSSES BALANCING PUBLIC POLICY AND TECH DEVELOPMENT IN 2021 GAMES FOR CHANGE FESTIVAL

On July 13, XRA’s Joan O’Hara hosted a panel discussion for the 2021 Games for Change Festival titled, “Why Public Policy Matters.” Joan was joined by Brittan Heller, Global Business and Human Rights Counsel with Foley Hoag LLP; Ellysse Dick, Policy Analyst with the Information Technology and Innovation (ITIF); and Jared Bomberg, Senior Counsel to Chair Maria Cantwell (D-WA) on the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation. Together, the group discussed the ways in which technology innovation and policymaking impact one another, noting that this uniquely reciprocal relationship – when it works well – serves to advance the greater good. Immersive technologies are being adopted for personal use and at enterprise scale – impacting everything from social interaction, to manufacturing, to medicine. And with that adoption novel policy questions are emerging. The panel agreed that in terms of balancing public policy and technology development, the idea is to ensure the best interests of consumers are always front-and center – while at the same time fostering a regulatory environment in which American innovation can flourish.
