Liz Hyman, CEO of XR Association, met with members of the XR in Finance Guild on March 27, 2026. The Guild is a consortium of like-minded professionals from 29 different financial services institutions who are currently developing immersive solutions and services—or are considering doing so.
The conversation centered on the evolving definition of XR and what it means for the financial services industry (FSI). As XR moves past being just a set of hardware options to an intelligence layer that helps deploy AI in a way that is more intuitive and keeps humans at the center of the experience, the FSI is having similar conversations as other sectors of the economy. How do they engage regulators now to help set appropriate guardrails unique to the FSI for this technology as it develops, and how does that merge into larger discussions regarding societal norms and standards for the use of smart glasses and wearable AI?
At the same time, advancements in open web XR standards and the promise of an open immersive internet are things Hyman suggested the FSI keep its eye on. Notwithstanding the ups and downs of walled garden immersive worlds, predicting the right timing for how society will widely adopt the technology—and thus propel a need for an immersive web architecture—may be challenging. Yet making plans now for stacking proprietary and secure engines on top of an open system is likely a reasonable investment.
These and other questions surrounding XR and FSI are the ongoing focus of the Guild. If other financial institutions are interested in joining the XR In Finance Guild they should reach out to xr-in-finance-guild@groups.io
