Washington, DC — On Wednesday, September 21st, 2022, XRA’s Director of Public Policy, Miranda Lutz, spoke at TradeExperettes’ Digital Trade Day during the panel, “Emerging Technologies and Digital Trade: Can We Keep Up?” She provided insight on how emerging technologies, like XR, can facilitate new methods of commerce and help address concerns around national security and supply chain vulnerability. Lutz discussed how existing trade rules may apply in immersive environments and the need to take a layered approach to understand where gaps in international trade agreements or norms may exist. She also addressed the importance of the international community establishing clear, flexible trade standards that do not foreclose future innovations in technology and highlighted existing efforts to ensure XR devices and software are interoperable. Finally, Lutz expressed the necessity of reducing barriers to digital trade so that all businesses from individual entrepreneurs to SMES to large companies can leverage the benefits of the latest innovation in tech.
