COMMUNITY

The XRA promotes the dynamic global growth of the XR industry. To that end, the association fosters dialogue between public and private industry stakeholders around the world and makes education and training material available to both creators and users of the technology.

ADVOCACY

We work to educate partners, governments, researchers, and the public about XR’s potential. This includes efforts to anticipate and mitigate challenges in the responsible development and deployment of XR technology. The XRA brings together international experts across industry to collaborate on educational resources and promotion of best practices in the field.

LEADERSHIP

We unite experts, researchers, developers, policy leaders, and other key stakeholders in working collaboratively on important matters that will impact the future of the XR industry. This includes the convening of working groups organized to address both near- and long-term challenges to the industry’s growth. Together, we enable the development of relevant research and guidance. We also host and participate in international discussions that shape the public discourse on XR technology.

NARRATOR: Now more than ever, the realm of the possible is expanding.
[00:00:05] Emerging technologies are blurring the lines between the digital and physical worlds. Enhancing human potential by pushing the boundaries of reality.
[00:00:14] Immersive technologies like virtual, augmented, and mixed reality allow us to travel to the ends of the Earth.
[00:00:20] To the galaxies beyond.
[00:00:22] And to the molecular level that underpins it all.
[00:00:25] They help us think, connect, design, learn, and collaborate, even from hundreds of miles apart
[00:00:33] And put information in the palms of our hands to improve the way we perform.
[00:00:38] Immersive technologies are poised to dramatically alter the way we live, and we are called upon to harness their full potential.
[00:00:48] The XR Association, a coalition of the leading headset and technology manufacturers of virtual, augmented and mixed reality technologies, aims to shape a bright future for the XR industry.
[00:01:00] Our mission is to promote responsible development and thoughtful advancement of XR that foster positive societal outcomes.
[00:01:09] Because these technologies are changing the way we learn, do business, and provide essential human services.
[00:01:17] Like in manufacturing, where XR facilitates greater productivity through enhanced human machine collaboration.
[00:01:25] Or in medicine, where XR allows surgeons and other healthcare providers to visualize the complexities of the human body in three dimensions.
[00:01:34] In public safety, where immersive technologies allow first responders to get hands-on training in low-risk, low-cost environments.
[00:01:43] And in entertainment, where XR allows users to step into realities far different from their own.

Frequently Asked Questions

XR is an umbrella term encompassing virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies, as well as other forms of alternate, expanded, or immersive reality applications, including those not yet invented.

The XRA website serves as a resource for stakeholders to access industry news and houses relevant and timely material for developers, consumers, researchers, and policymakers, including a manual outlining best practices for developer partners.

To indicate an interest in learning more about XRA membership, please go to our Join Us page and fill out the form.

The current members of the XR Association include hardware manufacturers, XR technology platforms, and companies from the broader XR ecosystem that have a stake in the growth of the industry.

The XRA convenes experts from the leading manufacturers of AR and VR headsets and technology, along with insights from researchers and other industry partners, to define and promote standards that can bolster the global growth of the XR industry. These standards are likely to evolve over time, as technological innovation within the XR industry is sure to lead to the development of never-before-imagined breakthroughs in XR experiences.

We also seek to develop useful best practices and guidance for partners. For instance, in October 2018 the XRA released a set of guidelines, the XR Primer 1.0, to outline a set of design principles to improve applications across all platforms and achieve better user comfort and safety. We issued an update, XR Primer 2.0, in December 2019 to include a chapter on culture, conduct and content in a 3D environment. Additional best practices will be added over time.
