What is XR technology?

XR is an umbrella term encompassing virtual, augmented, and mixed reality technologies, as well as other forms of alternate, expanded, or immersive reality applications, including those not yet invented. View more information on AR, VR, MR, and their applications.

Why does the XRA exist?

The XRA promotes responsible development and adoption of AR and VR globally with best practices, dialogue across stakeholders, and research. We bring together international experts and the leading manufacturers of AR and VR headsets and technology to serve as a resource for researchers, policymakers, and partners across the XR industry.

Is XRA different from GVRA?

The XRA is an evolution of the Global Virtual Reality Association (GVRA) and its mission. The XRA recently expanded its industry representation to reflect the broader XR industry, which encompasses augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), mixed reality (MR), as well as future XR technologies developed in the constantly evolving XR space. This transition, including a new name — the XR Association — has provided the association with the opportunity to relaunch as a more influential body and strong resource for stakeholders globally.

How does XRA define industry standards?

The XRA convenes experts from the leading manufacturers of AR and VR headsets and technology, along with insights from researchers and other industry partners, to define and promote standards that can bolster the global growth of the XR industry. These standards are likely to evolve over time, as technological innovation within the XR industry is sure to lead to the development of never-before-imagined breakthroughs in XR experiences.

We also seek to develop useful standards and guidance for partners. For instance, in October 2018 the XRA released a set of guidelines, the XR Primer 1.0, to outline a set of design principles to improve applications across all platforms and achieve better user comfort and safety.

What can I find on the XRA website?

The XRA’s website serves as a resource for stakeholders to access industry news, as well as resources for developers, consumers, researchers, and policymakers, including a manual outlining best practices for developer partners.
